The Internal Affairs Superintendent is a key role in fulfillment of the consent decree

CLEVELAND – Today, Mayor Frank G. Jackson swore-in Ronald B. Bakeman as the Internal Affairs Superintendent. In this role Mr. Bakeman will oversee the Cleveland Division of Police Internal Affairs Unit which handles all criminal investigations involving Cleveland Police Officers.

“Mr. Ron Bakeman is being sworn-in as the Internal Affairs Superintendent,” said Mayor Frank G. Jackson. “This position is one of those set forth in fulfillment of the Consent Decree.”

The hiring of a superintendent to oversee the Internal Affairs Unit was one of the mandatory terms and conditions set forth in the settlement agreement reached between the City of Cleveland, Division of Police and the United States Department of Justice.

“Ron Bakeman is the best qualified person to fill this very important position,” said Gregory White, the City’s Implementation Coordinator for the Consent Decree. “He is a tough no nonsense former prosecutor who will serve the City of Cleveland well.”

As superintendent, Bakeman will report directly to Chief Williams and his daily duties will include supervision of Internal Affairs investigators and management of the cases investigated within the unit.

“The hiring of the Internal Affairs Superintendent is an important step on the road to reform within the Division of Police,” said Chief Calvin D. Williams.

Ronald B. Bakeman was the Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio from 1983-2011. He has an extensive career in public service and law enforcement including holding positions as an Investigator with the Cleveland Department of Public Safety, and as an Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor. Mr. Bakeman is a graduate of the Case Western Reserve University School of Law and served honorably with the United States Marine Corps.
